Let’s first dive into what timeless, ageless skin is. Aging can be divided into two categories: intrinsic or chronological aging and extrinsic also called premature or photo-aging.(2)
Intrinsic aging is a natural occurrence in which numerous simultaneous mechanisms occur. Collagen and elastin production slows down; these are fibers that make up the dermal matrix and give our skin the ability to bounce back into its original position. As we age the capability of the skin to spring back to place is diminished. (3) Skin cell turnover slows down leaving excess dead skin cells remaining on the surface. The skin becomes thinner, (4) the dermal- epidermal junction compresses and the dermal structure begins to col- lapse.4 The visual results of intrinsic aging are:
dry/flaky skin
fine lines
wrinkles
sagging/lax skin
Extrinsic aging is caused by outside factors such as cigarette smoke, exhaust and pollution but the most common culprit is over exposure to UV radiation. Continual sun exposure not only hinders the skin’s ability to repair itself but continues to break down and debilitate the synthesis of new collagen. UV radiation can also lead to degradation of elastin fibers causing the premature decrease in skin flexibility.(3) The perceivable results of photo-aging are:
hyperpigmentation
leathery appearance
dry skin
deep wrinkles
While both intrinsic and extrinsic aging have existed since the beginning of time; our approach to fighting the visible signs of aging is new. New is the awareness that anti-aging treatments have to be performed for best results while the individual is aging, not after the individual has become “visibly” old. New is personalized cosmetics which targets the specific need of the skin. New is the inclusion of the scientifically proven cosmeceuticals in to the skin care products.
